LED Grow Lights

LED grow lights are relatively new for indoor growers, but they are growing (no pun intended) in popularity. Why is this? LED’s are energy efficient and put out a greater amount of light than the traditional HID or florescent lighting that has been used in the past. They take up much less space and don’t require the ballast supports that HID’s do. They run much cooler, so you don’t need to set up the clunky fans that many lighting systems demand. They have an average lifespan of anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 hours.

In short, LED grow lights are more energy efficient and are much easier to set up and maintain than traditional HID or florescent lighting systems. LED lighting can be expensive in the short term, however; although the long term benefits may be worth it.


T5 Grow Lights

T5 grow lights are also an energy-efficient choice for your indoor growing needs. At 100 lumens per watt, they use way less energy than traditional grow lights. Like LED’s, T5 grow lights put off relatively little heat (meaning that they can be placed closer to your plants without damaging them). They have a high life expectancy of about 20,000 hours.

While T5 grow lights are more expensive than traditional grow lighting systems, they definitely outperform them and are worth the longterm investment if you’re looking to move out of traditional lighting.


So Which Lights Are Better?

If you’re looking to transition out of your old HID or florescent lighting system, you can’t go wrong with upgrading to either LED’s or T5’s. Which system you go with will largely depend on your budget. LED’s definitely outperform T5’s in energy efficiency and life expectancy. This means that while the upfront cost will be more, the long term savings will add up. Some people do a combination of the two as they transition from their outdated systems. No matter which system you go with, you’ll find that having more space, less maintenance, and using less energy will make your investment well worth it!
